Active April in the Workplace

At Melbourne Osteopathy Sports Injury Centre, we recognise the importance of physical activity in the workplace. We support Premier’s Active April for the many physical and psychological benefits that it promotes. With just a little extra effort, you can begin forming healthy long-term habits to keep active whilst managing a busy work schedule.

Try the ideas below – they won’t take up much extra time and can lead to some very positive health improvements:

  • Choose stairs over the lift.
  • Treat escalators like stairs.
  • Try a walking meeting – this helps get the blood flowing and is great for generating ideas.
  • Find a lunch time activity – Pilates, walking, yoga, etc.
  • Encourage your workplace to start up lunchtime corporate health classes for your team. These are becoming very popular as they benefit individuals’ health and improve productivity for employers.
  • Walk part of the way to work – even if it’s just an extra 15 minutes – it all adds up.

Trusting Your Plan – Interview with Melbourne marathon runner Danny Cohen

Danny Cohen is a busy 40-year-old office worker and experienced road cyclist who started running marathons three years ago. At last year’s windswept Melbourne Marathon in October Danny ran 2 hours 46 minutes 48 seconds.

What makes Danny’s result so incredible is that an MRI report diagnosed a significant hamstring tear just 6-weeks out from the event. This explained the constant ache he had been feeling in his leg when running and for many people, this kind of news would have ended their marathon campaign. But Danny isn’t like most people…

Overuse Injuries

With Run Melbourne only 3 weeks away, here at Melbourne Osteopathy Sports Injury Centre, our team is hard at work keeping people moving in the right direction to meet their goals for this event. Many of the more common complaints rearing their head at this time in a runner’s build are those known as overuse injuries.

Run Melbourne

Overuse injuries occur at the musculotendinous junction – the area of muscle where it becomes tendinous and generally attaches to a bone. In most instances, overuse injuries affect tendons and occur when the load from exercise is too great for the body to adapt and repair in time for the next workout. Read more

Active April Blog: Habit Formation

With cold days now on the horizon it is essential that health and wellbeing become your highest priority. Active April is all about staying focused on what you have already achieved this year. This blog has and our monthly newsletter have already explained how motivation, commitment and drive can be used in your health journey. Now is the time to put all these changes into effect and stay strong during this time of temptation.

If someone offers you an extra piece of cake or chocolate or perhaps just one more drink, this maybe the time to think about it before saying “yes”. We should always ask: is it worth it? Will I be able to exercise tomorrow? Is this on my eating plan?

At Melbourne Osteopathy Sports Injury Centre we will help you stay focused and motivated, and teach you that movement is just as essential for your body to stay healthy as the food that you put in to it. If we can keep on track through April you are likely to have a successful, active and healthy winter. Read more

How To Make The Most Of Your Foam Roller

How do foam rollers work?

  • Foam rollers work on the myo-fascial* system to reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, increase body awareness and aid in injury prevention and rehabilitation.
  • Foam rollers are ideal for self-massage, stretching and rehabilitation exercises.

*The myo-fascial system refers to the muscle itself and its fascia – a thin sheath that wraps around and connects the muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels of the body

Dr Catherine Allison presents this article to help you incorporate a foam roller in to your exercise routine. It follows up on a similar post that explains how to make the most out of your Spiky Ball.

Bike Fitting Interview With Simon Coffin

The sun is shining, the magpies are swooping and the blossoms are blooming – this can only mean one thing: spring is in the air and it’s time to dust off the bike and get out for some well needed fresh air! For many of us, winter sees the road bike being packed away in a corner or perhaps locked into a wind trainer. With summer around the corner it’s easy to want to jump straight back into an exercise program but before you do there are a few things to consider, particularly when it comes to proper bike positioning.
